Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. A charming handle for a ceremonial dagger known as a kris (also keris) that is hand-carved from deer antler. The slender handle takes the form of an abstract zoomorph, perhaps a bird or a mythological creature. The creature presents with a lengthy neck, a massive beak, a protruding crest, and a pair of inlaid lead eyes. Size: 2" L x 0.8" W x 3.6" H (5.1 cm x 2 cm x 9.1 cm); 5.3" H (13.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Repair to crest atop head, with very light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks, abrasions, and ossification commensurate with age, and light abrasions to lead eyes. Nice patina throughout.
