Western Hemisphere with California as an island. 1729. By Philipp Cluver. Leiden, Netherlands. Published in ‘Introductio in Universum Geograpicam’. Culver was the geographer at the famous university at Leiden, where he became the founder of Historical Geography. Besides the always popular image of California as an island, this map shows a virtually unknown northwestern North American continent, with no Great Lakes. The fictional course of rivers in eastern North America. South America’s rivers have a single large fictional lake as their origin. Discoveries of de Vries are shown near Japan as well as Tasman’s discoveries around New Zealand. Cherub’s holds the title banner. Copperplate engraved, hand colored. 10 1/2 x 8 1/4”. Overall excellent condition, minor foxing on edges. Authenticity Guaranteed.
