Description
**Originally Listed At $750**

Tom Russell (American, b. 1950). "Spotted Horse at Custer's Last Stand" acrylic paint on canvas, 2011. Signed "TR" on lower right, and artist's signature, date, and title handwritten on verso as well. A striking painting by Tom Russell inspired by Custer's Last Stand - a legendary conflict over U.S. expansion between federal troops led by Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer and the Northern Plains Indians (Lakota and Northern Cheyenne along with a smaller number of Arapaho) led by Sitting Bull. This painting features a grand spotted horse surrounded by slain men. The prominence of the horse is significant. When Sitting Bull returned from exile in Canada on July 19, 1881, he surrendered at Fort Buford, and U.S. soldiers confiscated weapons as well as approximately 350 horses. Sitting Bull would draw images of himself as a warrior riding a blue horse, wielding a lance, with arrows in the air. Note how Russell pays homage to this by outlining the horse in blue and depicting him with a blue eye shield. All is delineated with thickly applied paint, replete with wonderful skeins and expressive gestural marks. A captivating painting by world-renowned artist and singer-songwriter Tom Russell, set in a custom frame. Size of painting: 35.5" W x 47.5" H (90.2 cm x 120.6 cm) Size of frame: 37" W x 49" H (94 cm x 124.5 cm)

Also interesting, Sitting Bull had a vision of conquered soldiers around his camp, a prophetic vision of Custer's Last Stand in which Custer and all of his men were killed, while about 50 under Sitting Bull were slain.

Please note: This painting was published in "Blue Horse - Red Desert - The Art of Tom Russell".

Of note: In addition to creating mesmerizing paintings, Tom Russell is a singer-songwriter who has written songs recorded by Johnny Cash, KD Lang, Iris Dement, Nancy Griffith, Ramblin Jack Elliott, and more!
