Description
James Buchanan Signature, Lovely Presentation

A signature clip belonging to James Buchanan (1791-1868), American statesman and 15th U.S. President, signed as "James Buchanan." N.d., n.p. Expected wear including scattered stains, else near fine. The signature clip appears to be hinged at the sides and is displayed in a floating mount under a print depicting Buchanan after the original portrait by John Chester Buttre. Matted and framed behind glass. Not examined out of the frame. An embossed silver seal from Argosy Book Store is located on the paper backing verso. Isolated scratches and scuffs to the black-finished frame, else very good. The actual size of the signature clip is 4.75" x 1" while the overall frame size is 12.375" x 16" x 1.125."

James Buchanan, a trained lawyer, gained his first political experience in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Buchanan transitioned to the U.S. House of Representatives in the early 1820s, and later served as a minister to Russia, 17th U.S. Secretary of State, and U.S. Ambassador to Britain under the Jackson, Polk, and Pierce administrations respectively. A hardline Democrat, Buchanan opposed a federal banking system, supported western expansion, and lobbied for states’ rights. Buchanan was often accused of being a "Doughface," or a Northerner with Southern sympathies. His inability to mitigate regionalism left his successor Abraham Lincoln to deal with the Civil War.
