George Jones & Sons Majolica Turquoise-Ground Scroll-Handled 'Boteler' Four-Pocket Oyster Plate
Circa 1880
Designed for J.W. Boteler & Brothers based on a patent of 16 June 1874
The pink central well surrounded by four naturalistic oyster shells among waves, the lobed fan-shaped dish with an Art Nouveau style beaded scroll handle, impressed GJ monogram & crescent mark and E black painted X. Width overall 9 inches; length 8 5/8 inches.

John W. Boteler was a ceramics importer and retailer based in Washington D.C. In addition to the George Jones majolica model, variations of this patented form were produced in porcelain by Haviland & Co., Limoges and by an unidentified Palissy ware manufacturer.
