East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao (also Gansu-Yangshao) culture, Machang Phase, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. A lovely bichrome pottery vessel created more than 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from what is known as Gansu or Qinghai province today. The handsome form sits on a small round base, dramatically angles out to a low corset, then develops to a full body with a short cylindrical neck and twin looped handles. The outer surface and inner mouth are elaborately decorated with linear and stylized geometric patterns via fired-on mineral-based pigments of black and deep red hues. Size: 5.5" Diameter x 4.5" H (14 cm x 11.4 cm)
