Description
Ancient Near East, Iran to Egypt, Islamic culture, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A beautifully preserved glass bottle made from a thick and semi-opaque yellow glass and decorated with wheel-cut designs. The squat body has a circular base with the faceted shapes around the exterior and a short neck is also similarly shaped into a heptagon. The artisan used a lapidary technique of wheel-cutting to create these surface facets then polished the corners. Geometric shapes were favored in Islamic art and architecture, the 7 and 12 pointed stars and girih patterns gaining widespread use in mosques during the medieval period and wheel-cut glass gained popularity throughout the Islamic world, from Egypt to Iran. Size: 2" Diameter x 2.75" H (5.1 cm x 7 cm)
