Ancient Near East, Islamic Period, ca. 9th to 13th century CE. A necklace of wearable form constructed with dozens of petite, polished sapphire beads along 2 strands. The interior strand consists entirely of sapphire beads while the exterior is fronted with several petite blue glass beads, 5 of which exhibiting opaque white glass 'eyes' that were protective symbols against evil magic. Size (interior necklace strand): 16" L (40.6 cm); (largest bead): 0.44" W x 0.51" H (1.1 cm x 1.3 cm)
