Archaic Native American Preform Stone Tool
Item Details
Description
Native American, Midwestern to Southern United States, Indiana, Newton County, Eastern Woodlands, Archaic Period, ca. 5000 to 1000 BCE. An example of a bannerstone or tool preform, shaped from a banded stone, with a groove around the center. If intended to use as a bannerstone the maker did not complete the traditional perforation through both sides, hence the preform designation. The groove appears well worn, so perhaps this stone served another function. The linear grooves and abrasions on this piece could be from use or farm machinery; farmers that are ploughing and de-stoning their fields will occasionally unearth these artifacts! Size: 3.8" L x 3" W (9.7 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
