7 Archaic Native American Stone Blades & Tools
Item Details
Description
Native American, United States, Archaic to Woodland Period, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. A fine collection of 7 large stone tools and blades all hand knapped and flaked from chert to use as knives, scrapers, or spear heads. All are bifacial and 3 are ovoid or petaloid with a rounded butt or gripping end, and taper to a pointed tip - the periphery sharpened all the way around the blade. The largest of these is a chert stone that has naturally formed perforations due to vugs that contain bubbly druse/oolith quartzite structures - whether the stone was intentionally flaked with the druse visible, or the pockets exposed with time and use is unknown. The 2 narrow blades have serrated edges and stems for hafting to a pole or handle, and the final two have a straight or concave basal edge. Tools like these were invaluable for hunting, trading, and ceremonies; they have been found in caches, perhaps deposited as religious offerings. Size (blade w/ vugs): 8.75" L x 2.5" W (22.2 cm x 6.4 cm); (case): 16.125" L x 12.25" W (41 cm x 31.1 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
