Description
Eight Piece Porcelain Frog Orchestra. Six frogs playing: wind instruments and drum, plus a frog oboist and bassoonist possibly from a later mold, or competing factory. All dressed as 18th Century instrumentalists, including wigs, vest, pantaloons, etc. Their heads, legs, feet, and hands modeled and painted realistically as frogs. Six with underglaze cobalt blue parallel lines with strike, and incised letters to base undersides, to indicate which "position" the frog plays. The remaining two probably Eastern French, or also German, marked with black enamel 60 over glaze to base undersides. Germany or France. Circa 1890 - 1900. {Approximate dimensions: 4 7/8 high - 5 1/2 inches high}. Condition: Gilt losses to wind instruments; drum broken in two and professionally re-glued and over-painted, now showing. Trombone now lost, absent, but the wire armature remains; thumb loss, left hand. Three with losses to wind instruments. Minor wear, tight hairline cracks to base undersides. Minor wear throughout.
