Edward Topham (1751-1820) was an English journalist and playwright who upon leaving leaving Trinity College, Cambridge, travelled on the continent and spent six months in Scotland, publishing this work on his return in 1776.

"The public are here presented with a Collection of Letters, which were not originally intended to be printed, but written in the familiar intercourse of private friendship. Some peculiar circumstances first suggested the idea for their publications. As many as were sufficient for the purpose were collected together: every personal circumstance that might have occurred in them blotted out; and they are now allowed to make their appearance with the permission of those to whom they were addressed. It will probably seem unnecessary, that any farther accounts of Scotland should be given, since two very respectable characters in the literary world have already communicated their travels to the Public. But the Author of these Letters begs leave to say, that the following pages do not contain a description of Scotland in general, but of Edinburgh alone: of its Customs, Laws, Entertainments; and, in short, of all that relates to the manners of a polished people. They are the living and real sentiments of the Scotch upon various occasions." [From the Preface]
