Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A magnificent glass beaker cup, resting on a pad foot, with a waisted body and applied decorative trailing around the midsection, and pontil mark on the base. In addition to this pleasing form, the glass presents an astonishing amount of rainbow iridescence that complements its soft aqua hues This type of vessel is usually found in the Eastern Provinces or the Levant region of the Roman Empire. Most scholars agree Roman glass was of the highest quality - both aesthetically and technically - among the ancients. While glass making had been practiced for centuries, glass blowing was invented in the Roman-controlled Holy Land in the 1st century BCE. This innovative technology revolutionized the artform. Size: 2.65" Diameter x 4.25" H (6.7 cm x 10.8 cm)
