James Longstreet ALS Quarterly Report on Texas Military Supplies, 1858
A short letter from future Confederate general, James Longstreet. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 9.5", Fort Bliss, Texas, dated January 19, 1858. In a letter addressed to Col. H. Craig, Longstreet relays the quarterly return for Company I, 8th Infantry, for the first quarter of the year. With docketing on verso. Flattened mail folds, with toning to the folds. Small separations at fold edges. Boldly signed "James Longstreet Capt. 8th Inf. Bt. Maj." at the conclusion.
James Longstreet (1821-1904) graduated from West Point in 1842 and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served with distinction during the Mexican-American War, fighting under Zachary Taylor with the 8th U.S. Infantry. He received a promotion to captain following the Battle of Churubusco, and soon after received a brevet promotion to major after the Battle of Molino del Rey.
