EDWARDIAN EVENING GOWN, TRAINED BLACK NET WITH SATIN + VELVET RIBBON APPLIQUES, c1910

A regal circa 1910 midnight black net 1-piece in construction reception evening gown decorated with fancy hand constructed round satin and velvet ribbon floral design applique. Having short sleeves, decorated with vertical gold hand beadwork trim over each shoulder and with front hook and eye closure. Nine fabric covered stays in bodice.

The dress skirt center front panel is flanked by large applique designs and back with a long flowing train with rounded hem.

The bodice is lined with black satin with 8 metal fabric covered stays. The bodice underarms has NO discoloration or staining.

The back skirt tapers out giving fullness puff down the back for a beautiful fall. The dress is lined with a black satin with gold printed circle designs.

CONDITION
The dress is in fair condition. The net at bottom of skirt is dry and scattered rips in net at hem line with some repairs to rips. No fading or discoloration on gown.

The bodice has no underarm discoloration or staining. No missing hook or eyes from front closure.

PROVENANCE
Clothing from the estate of William Insco Buchanan (September 10, 1853 to October 17, 1909) who was an American diplomat. On January 26, 1894, President Grover Cleveland (the former mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York appointed Buchanan United States Minister to Argentina. Buchanan was chosen by John G. Milburn, president of the exposition, as the exposition was planned with a Latin American theme and they wanted someone who knew the South American countries well Buchanan was Director General of the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, New York from May 1 through November 2, 1901, and is credited with the construction, operation, and dismantling of the exposition. His ancestors still resides in the same home in Buffalo, New York and all clothing were stored in the attic of this ancestral home.
