U.S. Model 1833 Dragoon Enlisted Man's Saber and Scabbard,
Nathaniel P. Ames, Springfield, Massachusetts, 1839.
Brass hilt, the down turned quillon marked 'WS' for Springfield Arsenal sub-inspector William Smith, two branches on the knuckle bow with slot at the top connecting to a stepped pommel with back strap, dark brown leather covered grip with brass wire wrapping; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and pipe back, the right side etched near the hilt 'N.P. Ames/Cutler/Springfield/1839' above stamped inspector's mark 'WS,' and etched on the left side of the blade 'United States,' with leather washer at top of blade; iron scabbard with two suspension rings, the right side of the drag stamped with inspector's mark 'WS,' the left side of the drag stamped 'MPL./ORD.'
Blade lg. 34 1/8, overall lg. 39 1/2 in.

Condition
Hilt toned to deep yellow, the inner branch with a stable crack where it joins the knuckle bow, leather grip wrapping has minor alligatoring; blade is bright and has very minor peppered toning toward the tip and scattered light gray toning with associated very minor pitting near the hilt; scabbard is toned to mottled brown and has two small dents at the tip and a light scrape between the suspension mounts.
