Mounted Officer's Saber and Scabbard,
W.H. Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia, mid-19th century.
Closely resembling the U.S. Model 1833 dragoon saber in form, this sword has a nickel plated steel hilt with two branches and knuckle bow connecting to a stepped pommel with backstrap, ray skin covered grip with twisted iron wire wrapping; curved single-edge blade with pipe back and false edge at the tip, the upper two thirds etched with foliate, tent, eagle, Indian, and panoply of arms, the base of the blade etched 'W.H. HORTSMANN/& SONS/PHILADELPHIA,' with leather washer at top of blade; nickel plated steel scabbard with two suspension rings.

Condition
Plating on hilt is approx. 50%, ray skin and wire wrapping are in good overall condition; blade is bright but has areas of surface oxidation toward the tip; scabbard plating is approx. 50%.
