U.S. Model 1836 Army Pistol,
Asa Waters, Millbury, Massachusetts, 1837.
8 1/2 in., .58 caliber round barrel marked at the breech 'US' (defaced), 'JH/P' ('JH' for inspector Joseph Hannis); flat lock plate with pointed convex tail, marked A.WATERS/MILBURY.MS/1837' below the brass pan, the inside of the plate marked 'L' and 'B,' the internal parts and screw heads marked 'B'; walnut stock, the left side marked behind the side plate 'JA' within an oval cartouche for inspector John Avis, and 'HKC' in a rectangular cartouche with rounded corners for inspector Henry K. Craig, and also with a small 'A' stamped below the cartouches next to the trigger pin; iron furniture of proper form, the trigger guard and side plate stamped 'U'; steel swivel rammer with button head.

Asa Waters produced this pistol under a contract dated September 22, 1836, for 4,000 pistols at the cost of $9.00 each. This was the last model of U.S. martial flintlock pistol made in the United States (Arcadi Gluckman, United States Martial Pistols and Revolvers, (Harrisburg, PA: The Stackpole Company, 1956), p. 64).
John Avis-inspected 1837-dated Waters Model 1836 pistols are scarce.

Condition
Barrel toned to deep brown, the 'US' at the breech has been defaced; lock toned to deep brown with a bit of mottling on the tail, tumbler bridle retains bluing, steel spring is weak, lock functions properly; stock has minor dings and dents; furniture toned to brown with occasional mottling.
