Charles E. Goodspeed Boston Massacre Engraved Bookplate After Paul Revere's Famous Engraved Copper-Plate Design
Charles E. Goodspeed (1867-1950), "Boston Massacre" Engraved Bookplate After Paul Revere's Famous Engraved Copper-Plate Design, Crisp About New.
A very nice example of a scarce "Charles E. Goodspeed" original Bookplate, graced with a facsimile of Paul Revere's famous engraved "Boston Massacre" print design, the scene showing British soldiers firing upon a crowd of civilians on State Street, Boston in 1770. Tipped to a paper backing for display and protection. Accordingly, the Old State House, Butcher's Hall, and the Customs House are shown as they appeared on State Street in 1770. Text within the plate reads: "Engrav'd printed & sold by Paul Revere, Boston / Ex Libris / Charles E. Goodspeed" in fancy script. This Bookplate was engraved by Sidney Lawton Smith (1845-1929), an artist who signed, "S.L.S. May 1904" engraved within the small urn at the top center of this plate. The printed image size measures about 4-1/8" x 2-3/4", with a sheet size of 4.25" x 3" as shown. Printed on laid watermarked colonial period style paper, mimicking the appearance of a Colonial-era bookplate. Boldly printed on bright crisp paper.
