Description
Magnificent Olympic ocean liner painting by Charles E.Dixon(British 1872-1934), signed and dated 1910.(According to Ocean Liner historians)this a painting of the Olympic as it enters NY Harbor in 1910.The view is from the lower part of the NYC harbor, between the Wall Street area and Governor's Island. The tall building to the right is the Singer building, which was the tallest building in the world at the time, and the bridge to the right is the Brooklyn Bridge, which was built in 1870.The Olympic is the sister ship to the Titanic. It is a White Star fleet and the small tugs around the ocean liner (some) have American flags. This is an original painting by Charles Edward Dixon, not a print or a litho or a reproduction. We hired an expert restorer who trained at the Hermitage to fill in the small missing pieces of paint in the water, but otherwise the painting was found in the Dean Mathey estate in NYC in remarkably good condition.Dimensions: 35" x 2" without frame and 41" x 28" with frame.
Condition
Small areas of inpainting in the lower parts of the water near the bottom edge of the frame, otherwise great condition.Estate of Dean Mathey, NYC.
