Description
William Henry Harrison: Etched Campaign Lamp. When you are reading your campaign biographies of "Old Tip", you might want to have this whale oil lamp from 1840 close at hand. It stands 8 1/2" tall and consists of a molded glass base and a blown reservoir annealed to the top of the base. The reservoir has etched designs consisting of a blazing sun, a "Hard Cider" barrel, an American flag, a log cabin with a hide hung out to dry and a circle of diamonds around the top edge. We have seen similar lamps with deeply cut designs. This example is acid-etched, a process developed in Sweden in 1777 and brought to America by Swedish artisans in the early 19th century. It became quite popular around the time this lamp was made. There are some minor chips to the corners of the base. The burner and wick are modern replacements. It was obtained at an estate sale near Sandwich, Massachusetts. Lamps such as this rarely appear in the market.
