Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. An adorable pottery figure of a bird exhibiting a rotund body adorned with ample remains of black-painted spirals. The avian figure is shown seated atop a conical pillar as its flared tail protrudes from the posterior. The petite head protrudes from the front, presenting a pointed beak and target-motif eyes. Size: 2.2" L x 0.9" W x 1.6" H (5.6 cm x 2.3 cm x 4.1 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Idledale, Colorado, USA collection; ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA acquired 1965 to 1990

Condition
Professional restoration to beak, left side of tail, and right side of base. Minor chipping to periphery of base with some nicks and abrasions throughout. Otherwise, impressively preserved with nice remaining pigments and light earthen deposits.
