Ancient Near East, northern Levant, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. A hand-built pottery female idol figure of a characteristically abstract form standing atop a gently flared base. The feminine effigy presents with a slender waistline above voluptuous hips, a pair of nubbin arms, and a tapered neck. Her abstract and minimalist head bears a protruding tab on top and a rounded nose ring along the obverse. Scholars perhaps posit that these female figures were representative of fertility idols, but recent studies found that their iconography was likely more complex. Losses to both arms as well as areas of nose and flared base as shown, likely in antiquity. Minor nicks and abrasions to some surfaces, with light softening to finer details, and one small indentation along verso. Nice preservation to figural form. Modern drill hole beneath base for old display stand.
