[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] -- [JAMAICA & UNITED STATES]. A group of 26 albumen photographs, some featuring Black subjects, incl. troops drilling in Kingston.
26 albumen photographs, ranging in size from 2 1/2 x 3 3/8 in. to 9 3/4 x 7 5/8 in., mounted on 14 x 9 3/4 in. paper pages (varying degrees of toning, light spotting). Each with ink inscribed caption below, including "Negroes. Stoney Gut. Jamaica;" "Paul Bogles Chapel and;" "Coffee Property shewing Barbacues (sic). Monklands. Jamaica;" "Latium Sugar Estate. Parish of St. James. Jamaica;" "3rd W.I. (negro) Band. Upper Park Camp. Kingston;" "Drilling 3rd West India (Black) Regiment. Kingston;" "Southern Planters Residences. Charleston. S.C;" and others. The 3rd West India Regiment was formed in 1795 as "Keppell's Regiment." It disbanded in 1819 and was reformed in 1837 before disbanding again in 1870.
