Description
Original 1867 broadside signed by Clara Barton. The broadside excitedly advertises a lecture by “Miss Clara Barton!” regarding her work during the Civil War, which included the care of wounded soldiers and organization of hospitals. Barton garnered nationwide recognition for her efforts during the war, and quickly became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield.” After the war, Barton embarked on a successful lecture tour which ostensibly included a stop at “American Hall” in Connecticut, as noted on this broadside. It was on this lecture tour that Barton met Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, who involved her in the Suffrage/Civil Rights movements, respectively.
Dorence Atwater, who also signed the broadside, was a Civil War soldier who survived confinement in the infamous Confederate prison known as “Andersonville.” While imprisoned, Atwater compiled a secret list of soldiers who died and were they were buried. This list allowed Atwater, in partnership with Clara Barton, to identify and mark the graves of Union soldiers at Andersonville. The broadsides notes that Atwater “will be present, and after the lecture present his original record of Union dead at Andersonville.”
Museum-quality piece.
