Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu and Chancay cultures, ca. 800 to 1450 CE. A collection of hand-woven textile fragments made by Andean cultures from camelid wool (llama or alpaca) and hand-spun cotton fibers. Two are professionally mounted on modern cloth over wood frames and are ready to be displayed. One is a creamy white cotton plain weave with brown supplemental wool creating an intricate zigzag and bird motif. The other is a tan ground with registers of solid bands and abstract birds. The last textile is a long narrow band with an elaborate open-weave technique, the interlocking geometric shapes are outlined by open slits, using threads in brown and tan. Size (large bird textile): 11.5" L x 12.75" W (29.2 cm x 32.4 cm); (backing frame): 15" L x 18" W (38.1 cm x 45.7 cm)

All are fragments as shown. Tearing, fraying and perforations, and age-related staining. Two are professionally mounted on a cloth covered wood frame and are ready to display as is. The other fabric is in fair condition and delicate - tearing and losses and as shown. A 5" piece from this textile is separate from rest of fabric, not shown, but is included in the lot. This textile and separate piece are both mounted on foamboard.
