Description
Group of Ancient South American Textiles. Provenance: ex Jean Lions Collection, Geneva, Switzerland (1951-1980). Including: 1) Strip mantle fragment, Chancay Culture. Cotton supplemental weft textile with serial pelicans in profile along the sacred diagonal; 2) Tunic Fragment, Nazca Culture. Very fine checkerboard alpaca tapestry fragment of the center of a proliferous tunic; 3) 2 Fragments, Chancay culture. Small cotton piece with embroidered profile pelicans together with a gauze shawl in poor condition; 4) Sampler, Wari Culture. Cotton double cloth and complemental weft loom panel used as cartoon for the creation of more elaborate textiles. These rare weaver's reference panels were kept in the weavers tool basket. Ranging in Size from: 9.5'' x 8'' (24 x 20 cm) to 16'' x 12.5'' (41 x 32 cm).
