New York Herald Reports on Lincoln's Abolition of Slavery & 13th Amendment
8pp, measuring 15.5" x 22", New York, dated February 3, 1865. An issue of the "New-York Herald", Whole No. 10,385. With war news on Sherman, Savannah, the Draft, Rebels in Europe, etc., along with a report on the back page entitled "The Abolition of Slavery", which covers a speech by President Lincoln on the 13th Amendment. With flattened folds and light edge toning/ Minor foxing throughout. Slightly rough left edge from previous binding.
In part:
"Speech of Mr. Lincoln on the Constitutional Amendment…The President said he supposed the passage through Congress of the constitutional amendment for the abolishment of slavery throughout the United States was the occasion to which he was indebted for the honor of this call. The occasion was one of congratulation to the country and to the whole world. But there is a task yet before us - to go forward and consummate by the vote of the States that which Congress so nobly began yesterday…He wished the reunion of all the States perfected, and so effective as to remove all causes of disturbance in the future; and to attain this end it was necessary that the original disturbing cause should, if possible, be rooted out…"
