Description
(1893 - 1946) German politician who began his career as an ace in World War I, rose to become Hitler's right-hand man and head of the Luftwaffe, finally captured and committed suicide on the eve of his execution. Great military content D.S. on his Reichsmarshall letterhead, 1p. large 4to., Berlin, May 21, 1942, a fascinating document regarding the development of new signaling equipment, very likely radar technology. Stamped 'SECRET COMMANDO OPERATION' at upper-left, the document reads in full: 'Due to the difficult situation in the production of signal equipment which can only be remedied with the total resources of the Luftwaffe, I therefore order: 1. the total production of signal equipment required by the Luftwaffe will be put under the control of the Director General of Equipment...2. the chief of NVW ['Communications'] is to be significantly involved - proposals as to how this co-operation should be planned are to be submitted to me. Details should be discussed between Generalfeldmarschall Milch and the General of Communications Troops, Martini...'. Goring signs at the conclusion in green indelible pencil. Milch adds numerous annotations in red indelible pencil, adding his initials twice. Two file holes, else fine. Milch during this period was in charge of all Luftwaffe aircraft production, armament and supply. WOLFGANG MARTINI (1891-1963) was the General of Luftwaffe Communications Troops during World War II, and was the primary promoter of radar technology in the German High Command. His involvement was the greatest impetus for the development of German wartime radar. In most of his activities, Martini reported directly to Hermann Goring, but Goring never fully trusted him and the two often clashed over technical decisions.
