1st edition book contains collotype photographs of views of South Africa, Mozambique and Zanzibar and various sites associated with the Anglo-Zulu War.
Pictorial title page with portrait of Sir Henry Bartie Frere (patron of this publication).
50 leaves of stiff card with 100 laid down collotype photographs, which are mounted as pairs on rectors and versos.
Sam Alexander traveled to South Africa early in 1880 to collect these photographs. Views include many of the major South African cities and towns in addition Mozambique and Zululand including diamond fields, people, landscapes and its endless grandeur.
56 pages of text describing the various colonies, public institutions and prominent men connected with the Cape during the 19th century.

Original Morocco with pictorial design blocked in gilt to front and in blind to rear.
Dimensions: Volume: 12 in. x 10 in.
Condition: good overall pre-owned estate condition, all collotype photographs present, spotting noted not affecting photographs, boards are rubbed and re-backed with remains of spine laid down.
