Description
1849 California Mexican-American War 1ed Western World Travels in United States
A rare, first American edition of Alexander Mackays two-volume American travel narrative entitled, The Western World. A correspondent of the London Morning Chronicle, Mackay traveled to America to report the debates in Congress and to sound out public opinion on the Oregon question. Considered one of the foremost accounts of the period, Mackay wrote his account after having spent a year touring, studying, analyzing, and exploring the social, political, and industrial aspects of American culture. Notably, his subtitle for this book correctly highlights the fascinating chapter on the state of California. During his travels, California still had not been formally annexed as a state by the U.S. and was in the midst of the Mexican-American War!
