Description
1851 SLAVERY 1ed United States Peabody Pre-Civil War Pamphlet Abolition Politics
Ephraim Peabody was a Unitarian missionary to the western United States. His pre-Civil War article in the North American Review in October 1851 was printed as a standalone pamphlet in 1851 to further discuss the issue of slavery in the united states and to suggest means of removing it. His article paid special attention to keep out of the politics, while remaining pessimistic about the potential for political change to improve the lives of black people in America.
"Whoever reads these remarks will see that the subject under discussion is treated solely as a great social question; that the object has been to state some of the more material facts, which must necessarily control action in regard to it, and to suggest some practicable method of diminishing the evils of slavery, or of removing it altogether. Whether wisely or unwisely, all reference to its bearings on the politics of the day has been carefully avoided. Amidst all the changes of parties, slavery remains among us, and there seems but slight reason to anticipate any great improvement in the condition of the colored race in this country, through political action." (Preface)
