This ‘Life of Gen Frank Pierce’ by Bartlett is a biography on the 14th president of the United States, who saw the abolitionist movement as a threat to the unity of America. He alienated anti-slavery groups with the Kansas–Nebraska Act and enforced the Fugitive Slave Act setting the stage for the Southern secession and the American Civil War.

This 1852 first edition moves from Pierce’s early childhood and ancestry, the Mexican American War and subjects of slavery, to the National Convention and his Nomination for the Democratic Party with a portrait frontispiece.
