Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An impressive example of Maya iconography! A pottery bowl hand-painted with a procession of turkeys on the interior and a register of seated scribes on the exterior. A staple of the Maya diet and important animal in religious rites, turkeys were believed to be messengers of the gods who held exceptional powers in the nocturnal and dream space, thus the birds came to serve as coveted symbols of power and prestige. Maya scribes were similarly held in the highest esteem as they had the power to immortalize a king or queen through their writing, documenting battles, religious favor, and political skill. Here they are seen forming curvilinear pseudoglyphs with their hands. An additional glyph adorns the central basin, while the underside is decorated with indentations resembling a 7-petalled flower. Size: 8.7" Diameter x 3.9" H (22.1 cm x 9.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
