Description
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. An interesting ceremonial double bladed knife, with linear patterns etched near the handle. The wooden grip is covered with brass panels repousse decorated with faces and triangular shapes. Metals such as copper and iron in Africa were a precious commodity and used as prestige items, metalworking itself was symbolic and represented creation and birth, while weapons had the power to take away life. Ceremonial blades, such as this were not only used for protection and ritual, but also as currency. Size: 10.75" L x 3" W (27.3 cm x 7.6 cm); 11.25" H (28.6 cm) on included custom stand.
