attributed to John Henry Belter, Three Rococo Revival Carved Rosewood Chairs
circa 1860, six-layer laminated rosewood backs with finely carved grape and flower motif crest rail, varying blue and green plush upholstery, including a pair of armchairs and one side chair, serpentine seats with floral carved seat rail, knees, cabriole legs with brass casters, unmarked.
Armchair 43 x 23.5 x 23 in., side chair 39 x 19 x 19 in., side chair seat height 16 in.
Belter gained his woodworking skills in Germany and later perfected the use of lamination which would become his signature for strengthening the graceful lines of his carved rosewood furniture from the 1840s-60s in New York. These pieces are a good example showing the use of six layers of rosewood laminate.

Condition
Later upholstery with some wear and staining; structurally sound with an attractive finish and rich patina.
The first armchair with a small chip/loss to the upper right grape-leaf; small veneer patch to the back near the same area; two small veneer chips to the right seat rail.
The second armchair with some old minor edge losses to the crest rail (minute and rubbed smooth old surfaces); overall good condition.
The side chair with some well done small veneer patches to the bottom edge of the back; rear legs appear to be reset with plugs.
