Description
SPECTACULAR BERLIN HAND-PAINTED PORCELAIN PLAQUE C. 1890. Comprising a large and impressive exceptionally well painted KPM quality porcelain plaque depicting "The Young Martyr" after the painting by French artist Paul Delaroche (1797-1856). The verso with impressed numbers 390 and below the letter C. Contained in a gilt wood frame. The plaque itself 12.5 inches x 8.75 inches (32 x 22 cm). Overall including frame 18 inches x 14.5 inches.
Provenance:
The estate of Ronald J. Palagi (1947-2022) Omaha, Nebraska.
The painting from which the offered lot is based, has two versions, the first, completed in 1853 resides in the Hermitage St. Petersburg Russia, and the second and final version completed in 1855 is in the collection of the Louvre Museum, Paris France. The narrative of the painting begins in the upper left corner, where the figures of a man and a woman, embracing each other in terror upon seeing the drowned Christian in the Tiber River, presumably their daughter. As the sun sets behind the couple, the last rays of light point directly across the painting towards the young Martyr illuminating her face and the faint halo above it, all alluding to the easter light of Jerusalem.
