Description

Rare intermediate state of Mitchell's map of the United States, the first map to include the territory of Wyoming, three years before it's official creation, based upon a failed 1865 congressional act. S. A. Mitchell, Jr’s excellent and collectible map of the United States during a time of changing border configurations. Soon after this map was issued, the two inset maps were dropped and an inset of Newfoundland was added instead. Shows considerable detail including railroads, mail routes (Pony Express), western emigrant routes, topographical details, territories held by Indians and more. Shows the country at a time when several western states were still territories. Arizona contains what would become the southern extension of Nevada. Utah’s borders have yet to achieve their final configuration. Dacotah Territory encompasses present-day Wyoming as well as what will eventually become North and South Dakota. The region that will be named Oklahoma will remain “Indian Territory” for the next 26 years. With an 1860 copyright date and from an 1864 edition of Mitchell’s New General Atlas. Few small spots of foxing. 13.375 x 21.25
