Description
Very fine in weave, this sumakh bag face of the Moghan Shahsavan used to be part of a khorjin. The dark blue field is filled almost completely by the so-called "turtle gul", with four octagons placed in the corners. Small four-legged animals and four birds complete the design. Rosettes and eight-pointed stars adorn the light green border. A number of design details are woven in glossy silk yarn. – An analogous example was published on the cover of the influential exhibition catalogue, "From the  Bosporus to Samarkand", as early as 1969, whereupon these woven miniature images became "respectable", as it were. – One rewoven area in the lower right corner. Original finishes all around, the kilim back is missing. Good overall condition.
Provenance: Schieder Collection, Nuremberg
