Description
Edgefield South Carolina Circa 1850's two gallon jug. This is a outstanding jug with a rich oatmeal glaze that encases the entire jug with outstanding iron burst. Strong Dave Drake (Dave the Slave) attribution, the master of southern pottery. His strong handle with thumb impression at lower terminal with the correct spacing at the top of the handle to lip. ribbed shoulder tooling and two / / on the mid section of shoulder and base of spout. A scarce jewel of Daves masterpieces from this time period. Condition - Has chip restoration around the mid section of mouth all the way around, very nice job. The handle has a crazing line in the mid section, Not a Hairline and is only in the glaze. No other chips, no hairlines, or other repairs. Standing 13 1/2" Tall Dave "The Slave" Drake work is in numerous collections, most notably the Southern Collection of the Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, SC; the Smithsonian Collection of the National Museum of American History, Washington, DC; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; and the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. The 1998 exhibition The Life and Works of the Enslaved African American Potter, Dave at the University of South Carolina's McKissick Museum was the first exhibition devoted solely to David Drake's pottery.
