Description
1840-1850s Edgefield, South Carolina enslaved master potter Dave Drake (1800-1870?) Two Gallon Fluid Jug with two large slash marks on the top shoulder. This is an outstanding jug by the master potter Dave Drake. From the classic Dave handle and form to the tooled rim treatment, all strongly points to this being his work. This is one fine jug with a striking form and glaze, typical of the 1840-50s time period. One of the very cool and unique features is the friction ridges left by Dave's fingers that are on the base of the jug. The form points to Dave's hand with a narrow base rising to a bulbous shouldered form. Collector/investment grade example and is a fresh discovery from an estate in North Carolina, has old traces of white paint residue. Condition is collector grade gem mint with No chips, cracks or repairs. Fresh example standing 14" Tall
