[CIVIL WAR]. Union Lieutenant Colonel's double-breasted frock coat.

Navy blue seven-button double-breasted wool frock coat with velvet-lined standing collar and lieutenant colonel's shoulder straps. Shoulder straps are single bordered, 1 1/2 x 4 in. with silver bullion oak leaves, background dark blue indicating a lieutenant colonel with staff duty. Fourteen Union staff buttons on the front with backmarks "Scoville Mfg. Co.," "Steele / Johnson," and "Extra Quality" and one on the reverse with backmark "Thomas N. Dale & Co. / New York" (3 missing from rear vent and tails). Three-button non-functional cuffs. Skirt is approx. 17 1/2 in. to rough edge. Sleeves approx. 7 1/2 in. width. Sleeve, body, and pocket linings in place. Tightly quilted chest padding and striped cotton lining the sleeves. Two interior pockets and pockets at the tails.

Coat exterior shows some mothing, wear, and light soil. Tear at center of velvet collar lining. Both straps with small losses to top layer of blue background. Generally good condition overall.

[With:] Blackened leather belt adjusted to 28 1/2 in. with brass keeper and 3 1/4 x 2 in. Model 1851 cast brass eagle plate (patina, leather with heavy wear and loss to blackening but still pliable). Keeper marked with "228" and sewn to end. Plate with "228" stamped on reverse.
