Grover Cleveland ALS Re: Ceremonial Opening of the Brooklyn Bridge
CLEVELAND, Grover. Autograph Letter Signed, "Grover Cleveland", 3pp, on State of New York Executive Chamber letterhead, 4.75" x 7.75", Albany, May 19, 1883. The first page is faded and mostly illegible. Expected folds with slight separation, else good condition. Accompanied by a black and white print of the celebratory opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, laid on cardboard. A very attractive set.
Grover Cleveland writes while Governor of New York, declining a dinner and an invitation to attend the opening ceremony of the Brooklyn Bridge, which was dedicated by President Chester Arthur on May 24, 1883. The letter is addressed "My dear Sir", so it is not clear who the intended recipient is. He cites his heavy workload as the reason for declining: "The legacy left me by the late Legislature which comprises a large mass of proposed laws...and for the consideration of my time is limited..."
