Description
A very long carved wooden mask with incised geometric designs accented with kaolin clay pigments and a wonderful highly stylized form. The giwoyo (also called kiwoyo among the Eastern Pende) is believed to represent the spirit of the dead, giwoyo masks are worn on the top of the head of the dancer to give the appearance of a cadaver in a coffin during a wake. This mask measures 26.5 x 5.5 inches. A metal display stand can also be included. Pende peoples, Congo, central Africa. Provenance: The Dr Gilbert Jackson collection, MD.
