A pair of Apache pictorial beaded high-top moccasins
Each decorated with snaking banded lines of beadwork enclosing two beaded Ga'an dancer figures, with brass button closures and painted red crosses on the toes.

'The beaded image of a Gans dancer on these leggings indicates that they were used by a mountain spirit [Ga'an] dancer... originally the Gans were sent as delegates of the Supreme Being (Giver of Life). They were tutelary spirits who revealed to the Apache the good ways of life, i.e. to govern, cure, plant and harvest, to hunt and to be disciplined' (p. 226-227).

Condition
Each with general soiling and wear commensurate with age. Each is somewhat out of shape. One with stiffness to the hide and splitting up the toe with a couple of additional offset splits. Corresponding bead loss to the edges and toe of this moccasin as well. The other with a few scattered small areas of bead loss but in otherwise good condition.
