Item Details

Description

Central Africa, Cameroon / Gabon, Fang peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This wood byeri figure on an integral discoidal wood pedestal or lid with a large African snail shell set before him. The figure stands on slightly bent legs, holding a bovine or ungulate bone between his lips- the joint protrudes from the mouth’s right side. The aggressive stance is enhanced by the bared teeth and bone. Atop the head is a feathered headdress and braided cord. This power figure may have been a byeri or reliquary guardian mounted on a lid and box that contained remains or other sacred items. Size: 10" W x 23" H (25.4 cm x 58.4 cm)
