Item Details
Description
A large archive of material from Colville Barclay, who was a British diplomat serving as charge d'affaires in Washington D.C. during WWI. The heart of this archive includes a substantial amount of sensitive and secret communications concerning British-American relations. Includes: *** Contemporary typescript communications (approx. 59 leaves, being transcribed telegrams), dated 1917-1918, with manuscript corrections, from the British. Among these are included a number from the Foregin Sectretary Arthur Balfour. Includes many sinister anti-Semitic remarks; for example, "I reminded him of the attitude of the Jews and crypto-Jews at the time of the young Turk revolution and of a similar attitude of the Jews now in control of the Russian revolution." And later, "The party is led and organized by New York Jews..." and much other material on the War, on Bolshevism, and similar. *** A collection of 10 leaves of manuscript and typed official communications, one marked as personal and secret. These concern, among other things, British views on the US President's reaction to Bolshevism. Dated 1917-18. *** An 8-page typescript marked in pencil "copy for embassy," of a meeting in Ottawa, January 1918. *** A folder containing a large quantity (approx. 50 leaves) of other various war-time communications, 1916-18, some signed, mostly typed, some manuscript. Includes an autograph letter from James Hamilton Lewis who was Whip for the US Senate. *** And a large quantity of other material, including several hundred unresearched letters (mostly from Barclay's time in Washington.)
