Description
This is a very sweet painting of a Chinese Pekingese Dog attributed, according to the old receipt, to the painter Cheng Ya nan (old Wade Giles) in Pinyin would be spelled Zheng Yanan. It says the artist is from Wu chin in the Chiangsu (Jiangsu) province. Original, old Chinese Dog paintings are quite rare to find nowadays. Pekingese dogs were known as Lion Dogs and they were favored by the ladies and gentlemen of the Imperial Court. This cute little dog has been painted with an autumnal background with autumn leaves changing color and matching some of the color in his fur.
Painting, ink and light colors on paper canvas, Not mounted for scroll hanging, but retains the old silk brocade mat surround and is ready for framing in a Western style frame.
Size of painting: approx. 41 in. H x 12 in. W
Seals: Three seals, two artist seals and one collector seal.
Provenance:
An American family estate collection (circa 1960s)
A Japanese family estate collection (circa 1920s-1930s)
Provenance with the names of the two families will be provided to the winner.
