A Satsuma Bowl
Meiji era (1868-1912), circa 1890
The deep bowl painted in polychrome enamels and gilt, decorated on the interior with a blossom-shaped reserve with beauties and children in riverboats en route to an island pavilion, the surrounding flower-petal reserves of geometric and floral designs, the interior walls with woven bamboo painted in gilt over which climb numerous Chinese boys, the interior rim decorated with lappets of geometric and floral design, the exterior painted with three shaped cartouches of Chinese boys in various activities punctuated by shikishi-shaped panels of geometric designs against a ground of butterflies, the foot surrounded by flower-petals of scrolling vines and dots within chevrons, and stylized flower heads, illegibly signed on the underside Dai Nihon Kōbe Shin[]zan zō, and with an impressed signature Taizan
