A SET OF GOLD-LACQUER BOXES
Meiji era (1868-1912)
Comprising a rectangular box with inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid, the box fitted with a kakego (interior tray) and containing four smaller rectangular boxes and lids and pierced with a circular opening to allow one of the boxes to be released; the exterior and tray with landscapes in suibokuga style featuring craggy mountains, pavilions, pine, cherry, and other trees, the smaller boxes each with sprays of chrysanthemum blossom; the wood substrate covered in gold and black lacquer decorated principally in gold takamaki-e embellished with gold kirigane against a background of fine gold hirame and nashiji, the other surfaces rich gold nashiji; with a wood storage box
